DCWIP PREFERENCE POLL SHOWS MOST DESIRED CANDIDATES IN
WARDS 2, 4, 7, 8 DURING COVID-19
WASHINGTON, DC, May 4, 2020 — A DC Women in Politics (DCWIP) online preference poll shows a majority support District of Columbia City Council candidates Brook Pinto (Ward 2), Janeese Lewis George (Ward 4), Veda Rasheed (Ward 7) and Yaida O. Ford (Ward 8).
More than 3,000 supporters of DCWIP were invited to take the poll conducted in April in lieu of a public town hall meeting with women candidates in accordance with the District’s COVID-19 stay-at-home restrictions. The poll results are as follows:
Brooke Pinto won in a field with two other strong women candidates Yilin Zhang and Katherine Venice.
Janeese Lewis George, in what is be a highly contested primary, won over Marlena D. Edwards.
Veda Rasheed won over Rebecca Morris with a strong showing.
Yaida O. Ford moves forward to compete against three male candidates on June 2nd.
Based on the poll results, DCWIP members will mobilize its vast network of resources to change the composition of the DC City Council where women are underrepresented. Currently, only four women serve on the 13-member DC City Council. Three women were elected to the city’s first City Council, and in 1997 seven women were elected by DC voters.
Even in the COVID-19 environment, DCWIP will support the endorsement of these candidates for the remainder of their campaign through the June 2 primary and thereafter. “We will be using all of our resources to encourage women to vote and support these candidates. As we all know, when women vote, women win,” said DCWIP President Anita B. Shelton.
After the June primary DCWIP will conduct a preference poll for the At-Large and State Board of Education races. In addition, due to the ongoing spread of COVID-19, the DC Board of Elections encourages all residents to request an absentee ballot at https://www.dcboe.org/home for the Primary Election on Tuesday, June 2; Ward 2 Special Election Tuesday, June 16; and the General Election Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
